Arrived in the Breathtaking Grassmarket

Arrived positively knackered (as they say here), but let me tell you, my view was breathtaking! The cab driver gave me a lovely tour from the outskirts of the city to the Grassmarket where we’d be staying for the next few days. I’m always amazed at how a disco nap and a shower can make you feel human again.

Nice View
No biggie, just a view of Edinburgh Castle!

Dating back to the 1300s, The Grassmarket, Edinburgh was populated with cattle fairs and stables when around the 1670s the market became a trading point for goods. This is where it gets a bit macabre and grim, The Grassmarket was also a traditional place of public execution.”

A Brief History of the Grassmarket

On Saturdays, they have this amazing open-air market with stalls ranging from local dairies and vegan bakeries to a myriad of artists selling sketches, jewelry, and textiles.

I met a lovely woman who advised me that my spiked coffee (ordered an Irish Cream latte expecting it to just be flavored with syrup not actually coffee + booze) is referred to as “cheeky” and nope, never calling it anything else in the future. Cheeky coffee for life!

Fair warning, the streets around here are twisty and STEEP. And everywhere is an uphill hike both ways.
